Piece Together a Better Future
A group of women sit in a classroom, exchanging curious glances. The first word is spoken, then another, and another. Stutters turn into sentences, hesitations into confidence, mistakes into laughter. Slowly, a language takes shape.
Her words become connection. Her words create opportunity. Her words piece together a better future.
Through “Medabrot Ivrit – Women Speaking Hebrew”, 500 Palestinian women from East Jerusalem learn Hebrew each year, breaking down language barriers that stand in their way. They gain the ability to navigate their daily lives independently—to access essential services, communicate with doctors, understand their rights, find work, and move freely in their own city.
🔹 Anan from Beit Hanina shares: “Thanks to this project, I can finally read my payslip. I discovered I had lost so much money over the years—sick days, vacation pay I never received—simply because I didn’t know Hebrew.”
🔹 Ruba, 52, an alumna of the program, says: “For 20 years, I ran my own dental clinic in East Jerusalem. After learning Hebrew, I found a job in a major Israeli organization, caring for Hebrew-speaking patients with disabilities. Thanks to my studies with Lissan, I can now communicate with them confidently.”
🔹 Yasmeen from Shuafat recalls: “One lesson, we learned hospital-related words. A few days later, I took my mother to the hospital and, for the first time, handled everything myself—from registration to X-rays. When I told my teacher, she was so proud that what we learned helped me in real life.”
At Lissan, Israeli and Palestinian volunteers come together to teach, to learn, and to piece together a different reality—one built on understanding, access, and shared strength.
